Before Steve Jobs came out to greet the press about the Iphone 4 issue he played a youtube video of this guy who is writing a song a day. I thought it was the funniest and coolest thing I have seen in a long time. Of course I then looked up his website and I am hooked. He has some mad video skills and what a mental challenge to create a new song every day. He just oozes creativity.
I think my favorite has to be this one:
A few weeks after September 11th I was in Fort Murray Canada and on the Canadian music channel they were having a benefit to the victims of the attack. I saw for the first time the band Tragically Hip that night and they were the headliners. They were introduced as “The REM of Canada” so of course I had to investigate. After getting a few CD’s I realized they are in a class by themselves! I think they are one of the smartest and funniest bands I have ever heard. Like REM, seeing them is concert adds another level of enjoyment. They are considered one of the biggest bands in Canada ever playing large stadiums but are not even heard on the radio down in the US. I just saw them last month at the new Boston house of blues and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. One truly Canadian thing they sing a lot about is hockey ~ and a fun fact, the lead singer is the Godson of Harry Sinden…
The band is also known for their videos ~ here are some of my favorites:
This is one of my favorite Ben Fold’s songs. It really is a funny story like all of his stuff about - well just watch the video and he tells the story.. Who wants to grow old anyways…
This is my favorite photo of the band R.E.M.. It is the cover of Spin magazine from 1986 ~ I actually bought this magazine back then from a used record store in Kemore square my middler year in college. I have kept this cover all those years in a box that I broke into a few years ago. My favorite part is how cool they all look especially Michael Stipe with the “letter never sent” in his hand.
I have been to Athens a few times since I became a big fan of the band and always hoped to see them hanging out. But I did see all the sites ~ Peter’s old house, the 40 watt club, Globe bar, Walter’s BBQ, etc.
